Marbling with Underglazes Workshop

This one-time workshop is beginners friendly and super fun for all including experienced ceramicists that want to broaden their surface design options.

This workshop will focus on decorating bisqueware pieces to create a marbling (tie-dye) effect using colorful underglazes. This technique is beginners friendly and super fun for all including experienced ceramicists that want to broaden their surface design options.

We will also use wax and latex resist and other underglaze applications like bubbling to add depth to our designs.

All materials, firing & glazing included.

Intro to Handbuilding (4 sessions)

This course is designed to introduce the fundamentals of hand-building with clay. Topics include pinching, coil building, slab construction, surface decoration and glazing. Students are encouraged to create their artworks using their imagination and apply the demonstrations only as tools of their vision. No prior experience is needed.

Clay will be able to be purchased directly from BAC.

Students are invited to use the communal studio tools: sponges, wooden skewers, serrated ribs, and brushes. Kids 7-12

Sgraffito Workshop

Perfect for first-timer, and experienced ceramicists looking to learn a new surface decoration technique.

This 3 hr workshop will focus in the fundamentals of working with slabs and decorating with underglaze using the sgraffito technique. Sgraffito comes from the Italian word “graffiare” which means to scratch.

Participants will decorate a cylinder cup/planter by painting their pieces with colored underglazes and scratching away designs to expose the clay underneath.

Students are encouraged to bring images (print outs) for inspiration.

Calaveritas- A Hand-Building and Natural Dye Experience

TIn this 3 hr workshop artists Liz Navarro and Cayetano Talavera will guide participants through the process of making a personalized clay calaverita and a botanical print using cempasúchil flowers.

Ceramic artist Liz Navarro will introduce participants to basic hand building techniques like pinching and coiling to sculpt a calaverita ( ceramic sugar skull) and then decorate using clay flowers and colorful underglazes. The pieces will be fired and coated with a layer of clear glaze to make them part of your ofrenda for many years to come.

Textile artist Cayetano Talavera will guide participants through the natural dyeing technique of botanical bundle dyeing. Using pre-sourced and pre-mordanted organic cotton bandanas, botanical prints will be created with cempasúchil flowers. Cempasúchil, Mexican marigolds, the flower used to adorn ofrendas for Día de Muertos. It was believed Cempasúchil possesses the ability to absorb the sun's rays and illuminate the path back of the deceased with its bright yellow/orange colors and sweet scent.

Come honor your loved ones and celebrate Day of the Dead with us! We will have pan de muerto and drinks!
