Calaveritas- A Hand-Building and Natural Dye Experience

In this 3 hr workshop artists Liz Navarro and Cayetano Talavera will guide participants through the process of making a personalized clay calaverita and a botanical print using cempasúchil flowers.

Ceramic artist Liz Navarro will introduce participants to basic hand building techniques like pinching and coiling to sculpt a calaverita ( ceramic sugar skull) and then decorate using clay flowers and colorful underglazes. The pieces will be fired and coated with a layer of clear glaze to make them part of your ofrenda for many years to come.

Textile artist Cayetano Talavera will guide participants through the natural dyeing technique of botanical bundle dyeing. Using pre-sourced and pre-mordanted organic cotton bandanas, botanical prints will be created with cempasúchil flowers. Cempasúchil, Mexican marigolds, the flower used to adorn ofrendas for Día de Muertos. It was believed Cempasúchil possesses the ability to absorb the sun's rays and illuminate the path back of the deceased with its bright yellow/orange colors and sweet scent.

Come honor your loved ones and celebrate Day of the Dead with us! We will have pan de muerto and drinks!

*Participants will be able to take home their natural dyed pieces the night of the workshop and their ceramics pieces will be available for pick up at Cuarto Central 3 weeks after the event.
